DaDa Youth call for artists
As a part of DaDaFest International 10, DaDa Youth is looking for artists/practitioners who have experience of working with Disabled/Deaf young people to lead workshops to create new work to be showcased at the festival. In addition to the international artists that we have lined up to work with our young people, we are also updating our pool of national artists working in visual arts, creative writing and performance art forms, who have experience and knowledge of access support and working with Disabled/Deaf young people. If you are interested in DaDa - Disability and Deaf Arts adding your details to our artist database, please send your CV with a covering letter containing details of your experience and knowledge. If you are an artist/practitioner and you have an idea or proposal for a project working with young Disabled/Deaf people, please also include a short outline, no more than 1 page of A4, with your application. John Lennon Poetry Competition
Poet Laureate Carol Ann Duffy has agreed to judge a new international poetry competition celebrating the life of master lyricist, published poet and world icon John Lennon. The final stages of an international hunt for ‘Liverpool Lennon Poet 2010' will take place during the John Lennon Tribute Season, a major two-month cultural programme marking 70 years since Lennon's birth and 30 years since his untimely death. The season takes place from 9 October - 9 December 2010. The Liverpool Lennon Poet competition is being organised by the world's leading permanent Beatles-themed visitor attraction, the Beatles Story and Liverpool-born poet Roger Cliffe-Thompson who is the official Liverpool BT Arena poet. This world-wide poetry competition will form a significant part of the John Lennon Tribute Season, bringing tourists and poetry lovers from across the globe to Liverpool and culminating in a Liverpool Lennon Performance Poetry Slam on 6 November co-hosted by Jason Richardson of poetry collective, Wirral Ode Show. Poets from across the world are encouraged to enter unpublished verses which celebrate the life of the music legend. Poet Laureate Carol Ann Duffy will lead a team of judges who will award prizes in two categories: 1. Performance Poet - Poems composed and performed in Liverpool by their writers 2. Paper Poet - Poems submitted by email. The competition is open to anyone in the world and the winning poet will be the first to hold the accolade of Liverpool Lennon Poet 2010. Competition organisers are hoping to publish the poems in a poetry anthology. A separate Schools Poetry Competition will encourage secondary school pupils in Merseyside to write and perform their verses at a Schools Poetry Slam on 9 November. With John Lennon and the Beatles now on the curriculum, local pupils will be asked to compose a poem based on Lennon's lyrics and song titles and another verse celebrating the icon's life. For over 10 years the specialised Krocodile Krew has been organising and running nights that are tailor made for people with learning disabilities, to provide them with the aforementioned good night out. Rising in popularity and branching into various different nights the Krew and their events have gone from strength to strength. Here at Contact we couldn't be happier to play host to the first Krocodile Klub in Manchester. We sincerely hope you are able to come along and join the party. Tickets onsale now for Children's Book festival
We are delighted to announce that tickets are now on sale for the first Manchester Children's Book Festival. Launched from the Manchester Writing School at Manchester Metropolitan University, and directed by Poet Laureate Carol Ann Duffy, the Festival runs from 1st-4th July 2010. Events and activities include: launch event with Carol Ann Duffy and Gillian Clarke, the National Poet for Wales, fundraising Gala Dinner at the Midland Hotel in Manchester with Carol Ann Duffy, Jeanette Winterson and celebrity guests, musical performances of 'The Princess' Blankets', Family Fun Day with free activities including interactive workshops, exhibitions, art installations and performances, story-telling tents and a picnic in the park - come along and meet some of your favourite authors and characters. Doctor Who event with readings from Daniel Blythe, Steve cole and Paul Magrs - and a chance to meet characters from the series and take part in the Hyde Fundraisers' Doctor Who green screen experience- how can you miss it? Not only but also there will be a city centre reading at St Ann's church with Jackie Kay and a children's choir, afternoon tea and a literary quiz with Sherry Ashworth and Frank Cottrell Boyce and it's a continuing professional development events for writers, teachers and arts practitioners. Need a studio?
Large sculpture studio available at The Art House, Wakefield. Studio 1 is The Art House's largest studio, measuring 50.5 square metres. It's ideal for a sculptor but available to any practising artist or crafts person. The Art House usually lets the studio for one year minimum, but there may be flexibility on this arrangement. The studio is one of three lower ground studios, which provide the following: Level access to loading area. Large doors to loading bay for un/loading heavy/large items (W-2035mm x H-3010mm. Three-phase electricity. Extractor fans. Fixed sink. The aim of The Art House has always been to build studios with the highest possible level of access for people who face a wide range of different disabilities, reflecting its core ethos of inclusion. We also offer a range of other services to members including 121 support from our Artist Development Officer, art skills workshops and business skills, peer critique sessions, community workshop and print studio hire and information bulletin. Deafinitely Creative Competition
17 May - 14 July 2010. This programme, run by Britain's leading Deaf-led, professional theatre company, has developed six Deaf playwrights over the past 3 years and is on the hunt for new talent. This year we are holding a competition to find four playwrights for the programme. From September 2010, the four finalists will attend workshops led by professional playwright and Deafinitely Theatre's own dramaturg, Andrew Muir. These workshops will help each of the finalists develop their ideas into their own 30-minute play. To participate, you only need to be a deaf person living in the UK over the age of 16 with an idea to share. No other experience is necessary. How To Apply: 1. Send us a summary of your play. This can be in written or BSL form. If you send us a DVD please watch the guidelines in the video below. If in written form, your summary should not be more than 1000 words. 2. Include two pages or 5 minutes of script / dialogue from your play. 3. Include a description of yourself, your background, and why you think this course would be good for you. 4. Get Sorted 2: Budgeting and Fundraising for Youth Arts Projects
23rd September 2010, 10 am- 4.15 pm, Cornerhouse, Manchester. Artsplan, the training and publications department of Artswork and in-house training provider for ENYAN (English National Youth Arts Network), is delivering the one day course ‘Get Sorted 2: Budgeting and Fundraising for Youth Arts Projects' on 23rd September 2010 at Cornerhouse in Manchester. Artsplan is the largest provider of specialist youth arts training courses and publications in the UK and all training and publications are written and supported by experienced youth arts specialists, currently involved in direct project work with young people. This one-day training course is aimed at organisations and individuals who already have an idea for a youth arts project but are unsure on how to finance it. ‘Get Sorted 2' will take you through a step by step guide for planning and drafting your own budget, advise on the best way to fill in funding applications and suggest where you can go to find the funds you need. All participants will receive a certificate of attendance upon successful completion of the course and a wealth of practical resources. Prices for each course, which include lunch and refreshments, range from £110 to £150, with limited bursaries available. Produce a video (5 minutes maximum length) which will raise awareness of the ability of people who have a disability. The underlying theme of your entry should be Focus on Ability. Actor wanted Two Brothers and One World Cup
Two hander comedy set against the backdrop of World Cups 1982 - 2010. Rehearsals, junction 21 Milnrow/Shaw turn off, actor:-19th July - 4th August. Stage manager/operator Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Our slot is 1.40pm at one of the fringe's premier venues; Underbelly. Show runs from 5th Aug - 29th Aug (no show 17th Aug). Looking for one male, minimum age 40 - 45. Playing multi-roles, Hull Truck style. Main character- Mickey Rider from the North West. Mickey's the older brother, overweight and bald, useless with women but fancies himself as a bit of an intellectual. Has a massive grudge towards his younger brother. Must play guitar and sing to a reasonable standard. Other characters:- Mam Rider(good Scottish accent required), Dad Rider (North West), Cockney John, Jean, Vicky and Linny (good London accents). There's a lot if audience interaction in the play so need someone very comfortable with that. A love of football would be great but not essential. This part would ideally suit a Manchester based actor as rehearsals will be just off Junction 21, Milnrow/Shaw turnoff. Fee:- £1000. Your accommodation is sorted (you will have your own room in digs). Travel, Manchester to Edinburgh and back will be paid (Sorry but we're going on a coach). We've got one preview show booked for Sun Aug 1st and will hopefully have another on Mon 2nd in the Manchester area, all profits from this will be split equally between the two actors and stage manager. Possibility of free digs through rehearsal period for the right person. Please bear in mind this is Edinburgh, so it will be hard work and as it's a short rehearsal we need an actor who is prepared to have learnt a bit of the script by first rehearsal. COUNCILLORS COMMUNITY INITIATIVE FUND
Please note this is open to Liverpool residents only.
Grassroot community groups are invited to apply for a ward based small grant to support communties to run events and activities or improve facilities that will enhance the well being of local residents. Round 1 opens Tuesday 1 June, closing date Friday 25th June 4pm. Applicants can apply for grants that will benefit residents in a single participating ward in the City. CCIF is financed through the Neighbourhood Fund which is allocated to each ward in the City but only some wards are participating in CCIF. Neighbourhood Fund will still be used to benefit local residents in those wards not participating in CCIF. Prospective applicants will need to check the guidance to see if they can apply.
The scope of the fund is particularly broad and enables Liverpool City Council to support small community groups.
Priority may be given to: Projects which involve local volunteers. Applicants who have not had a CCIF grant before. See below for links to the web page where you can download an application pack.
