Disability Arts News
Rainy City Stories
We want your love stories and poems.
Whether you're an old romantic or a cynic, we invite you to tell us your tales (real or imagined) of falling in, out, or over love in our city. The winning piece of writing will be published on our website on the eve of Valentine's Day. And the winner will receive a big fat £50 Borders gift voucher, kindly donated by our friends at the Manchester Literature Festival.
Entries must be submitted by close of business on Tuesday, February 10. Please submit short stories or poems through the mechanism on our website, and put the words "love contest entrant" at the top of the story.
Entrants should only submit their own original work, and writing
that has not previously been published. Also, by entering the
competition you grant RCS the right to publish the piece online.

Open City Seeks Volunteers
The Open City project is now looking for inspirational volunteer co-ordinators to work with groups of people who think they might be interested in theatre, visual art, dance and music of all kinds.
All volunteers will receive training before working closely with community groups who don't currently attend the arts. Volunteers will work in pairs to guide their group on a journey through Liverpool's cultural scene.
Volunteers will need to be available for a minimum of 6 months and will be expected to arrange at least 6 visits to an arts venue with your Community Group in that time.

Visit to Tate Liverpool
Tate Liverpool invites you to join us on a special visit to Tate in February or March 2009 to meet with gallery staff to give us your opinions on the suitability of the facilities, services and resources for Disabled and Deaf people. The visit will include free entry to the new Glenn Brown painting exhibition as well as the permanent collection. Refreshments will be provided and assistance with travel costs. Dance and Drama workshop leaders needed
Interaction MK is currently looking for a dance workshop leader and a drama workshop leader for its inclusive performing arts project. Workshop leaders need to be skilled practitioners with experience of leading inclusive performing arts workshops. The workshops take place on Thursday evenings in Milton Keynes. Workshop leaders are required to have CRB clearance.

An exciting opportunity for disabled writers
Birmingham Repertory Theatre, Centenary Suite
7, 14, 21, 28 March 2009 (10am-5pm)
Script, in association with Outside Centre, presents an in-depth Introduction to Screenwriting Course to provide training for disabled writers to create their own stories for the screen.
Script is the regional development agency for dramatic writers in the West Midlands. We offer writers advice, mentoring, workshops, courses and development via industry-led partnerships. The aim of the project is to promote the skills and employability of disabled people within the arts and to provide opportunities for writers to develop their careers.
Tutors are experienced film-makers and teachers, specifically trained by Phil Parker to deliver this course. Using team workshops, lectures and discussion groups, the course explores stages of development, script format, genre and how to get your script made into a film. The course lasts four days spread over a number of weeks, offering a valuable opportunity for feedback on your own screenplay. Suitable for beginners. Age 16+
Cost: £90 (£60 concessions) NOTE: Bursaries to cover the fee and travel are available for some Disabled People from Wolverhampton

Deafinitely Theatre Opportunity
We are looking for a mature-looking actor (aged 40 to 75)
It is a small part, and the actor will play Alex, a deaf man who has been imprisoned for over 20 years. When the main actor, Tom (Matthew Gurney), arrives in prison, he struggles to fit in because of his deafness so when he finally meets Alex they form a close friendship.
You will be required to work for three days with a group of experienced actors to develop the play from 23rd to 27th February 2009. This will be held at Drill Hall in London.
Full rehearsals will be held in London in September for 4 weeks, then begin performing in October / November 2009.
Auditions will be held on 12 February at Oval House Theatre (opposite Oval cricket ground).

Extend
Exclusively for disabled people, Extend is a BBC-wide work placement scheme which offers appropriately experienced and/or qualified disabled people a great opportunity to gain six months' paid work experience within the BBC.
Starting from May 2009, over 20 placements will be available across the UK, in both programming and programme support areas. You'll need to match the criteria for the placement as well as demonstrate a keen interest in broadcasting and knowledge of BBC output.
Applications to be received by 5 February. Interviews are expected to be held between 9 and 27 March.

Working with special schools, experience of working alongside pupils or their advocates to explore and aid them in creating allotments and helping them acquire skills in growing and tending plants and vegetables.
Kingfisher is located in the Chadderton area of Oldham and in addition to educating children from all areas of Oldham, the school also receives children from neighbouring Boroughs.

Creative Practitioner Role and Outline Content of the Project: . The gardener will plan with pupils and staff and work in conjunction with an environmental artist. The artist will plan with pupils and staff at all stages of the project and will be experienced at listening to pupils ideas and helping them transform them into realities.
