Dana's Note
Hello to you all!
We know the tantalising draw of chocolate is already permeating the nations consciousness with only a few days to go...but before it does treat yourself with a decidedly less calorific newsletter that will provide you with lots of motivating opportunities, jobs and info and will be decidedly better for the waistline.

Yours

Disability Arts News
Seeking volunteers
We have a weekly disco / social evening in Hough Green in Widnes. We are holding it in St Basil's Social Club on Hough Green Road. It will run every Thursday from 6pm to 9pm. Its aim is to give people with learning disabilities a chance to experience a club environment with lasers and smoke machines. We hope to provide a night of entertainment with music, bingo, raffle and a pub quiz. The discos have provided paid employment to 12 adults with learning disabilities. We have given on the job training in service skills, money handling, working in kitchens DJing and have helped people with their social skills.
Our hope is to replicate this success. We are currently looking for volunteers (who are learning disabled) to staff the disco. If the event does well these jobs will become paid. Venues are Wheelchair accessible and have an accessible toilet. The disco has been going extremely well and is attracting around 80 people each week. In addition to enjoying the music, people can play bingo and take part in versions of TV game shows. You can contact Steven on 07931 270656 or at stephen.reed@hot mail.co.uk If you would like more information please give me a call on 07904403338, thanks Stephen Percival.

The Art Lover's Guide

A new art guide showing how people with a learning disability can be
involved and welcomed into arts has been launched for galleries, museums and art organisations. The new guide to visual art, written by people with a learning disability, was created by Mencap with the support of Tate Liverpool and Nokia. The Art Lovers' Guide shows how people with a learning disability can be better welcomed and involved in the arts. It offers practical advice to artists and organisations alike and contains the work and views of 10 artists with a learning disability.

This guide was led by the ten artists of Mencap's ‘In the Frame'
project, who meet at Tate Liverpool to explore their ideas and different
ways of being involved in the gallery. As well as producing the guide,
the group has run a public exhibition at Tate Liverpool, entitled ‘In
My Liverpool Home'. They have also run a conference, workshops, have
trained and worked as gallery assistants, and have piloted innovative
ways of exploring the gallery.

The booklet can be downloaded for free from Mencap's art website,
www.artspider.org.uk, or printed copies are available at £5 each (P&P
inc) by sending a cheque (made payable to Mencap), to The Art Lover's
Guide, Mencap, Burrell Road, Haywards Heath, West Sussex RH16 1TW.
