CALL TO ARTISTS

Sins Invalid is seeking submissions from performers, writers, visual artists and other cultural workers on topics of disability and sexuality for relationship-building and future collaboration.

This call is open to all artists familiar with the experience of disability, especially artists from queer communities and/or communities of color. Submissions can include all types of artistic expression - performance art, video, spoken word, dance, storytelling, song, visual media, and words on page - whose core expresses sexuality, power, healing, embodiment and activism.

Sins Invalid began in 2006 as a performance project that incubates and celebrates artists with disabilities, centralizing artists of color, queer and gender-variant artists as communities who have been historically marginalized. In 2007-2008, Sins Invalid grew to include an annual show, community-based performance workshops, political education workshops, and our growing presence online at www.sinsinvalid.org .

Submissions will be looked at for all Sins Invalid projects, including performances, workshops, online blog, and possible printed media and/or visual art shows. Please submit a CD or DVD of your work (those submitting written work for publication can email or send a hard copy), along with a short personal statement about why you are interested in working with Sins Invalid, and how your work relates to issues of sexuality and disability.

Sins Invalid Submissions c/o 1370 University Ave. #316 Berkeley, CA 94702

Please include a self-addressed stamped envelope if you want your work returned to you. We will contact you to confirm receipt of your work. If you do not have examples of your work on CD/DVD, please contact us for alternate formats.

Deadline for entries: Received by April 25, 2009.

Please feel free to email any questions to info@sinsinvalid.org.

Artist seeks studio

I wonder if you could help me. As a artist with an impairment, I find getting access to printmaking facilities difficult for one reason or another. I would like to expand my screen-printing skills and explore the possibility of finding a studio within Liverpool. Are there any studios within Liverpool that can provide both? Also, is there any funding for artists like myself, to develop their creative practice? Many thanks for your help.

Artsplan is the largest provider of specialist youth arts training courses and publications in the UK and all training and publications are written and supported by experienced youth arts specialists, currently involved in direct project work with young people.
The ‘Creative Facilitation' course provides an introduction to a creative approach to group facilitation. Throughout the day we will be using a number of different interactive exercises and games in order to illustrate content. Disability and Youth Arts
4th June 09, 10 am- 4.15 pm, Cornerhouse, Manchester
The one-day course, ‘Access All Areas: Disability and Youth Arts', is an extremely well established course and is running on 4th June 09, 10 am- 4.15 pm, at Cornerhouse, Manchester
This one day course, developed in partnership with Dada South is designed to encourage a broader exploration of equal opportunities within youth arts. Participants will develop an understanding of the importance of inclusive practice, through looking at political and cultural contexts, and exploring practical ways of ensuring youth arts projects and venues are genuinely inclusive to young disabled people. The course will leave participants feeling confident about their responsibilities, and inspired to engage in youth arts practice with young disabled people.
Jay Barron, Artsplan Development Manager, commented ‘This course is suitable for anyone working within youth arts, looking to learn more about the issue of accessibility and ensure equal opportunities are a natural part of their project planning; as well as those who would like to include the arts in their current work with disabled young people'.
All participants will receive a certificate of attendance upon successful completion of the course, and a wealth of practical resources and a copy of the ‘Access All Areas: disability and youth arts' guidelines (RRP £7.50). Defying Disability, now available to buy
Defying Disability The Lives and Legacies of Nine Disabled Leaders
Mary Wilkinson
February 2009 224pp ISBN 978 1 84310 415 5
pb £17.99 ‘This important book provides a fascinating insight into the
achievements of nine disabled leaders and the development of British disability politics and practice over the past 40 years. The leaders profiled reveal both a range of approaches to tackling disabled people's exclusion, and differences in personal attitudes towards impairment and disability politics itself. In doing so, Defying Disabilty provides a more accurate reflection of the diversity of disability than some traditional disability texts.'
- Claire Tregaskis, disability consultant, Inclusion Full Stop
This book tells the stories of nine disabled leaders who, by force of personality and concrete achievement, have made us think differently about disability. Whatever direction they have come from, they share a common will to change society so that disabled people get a fair deal.
Defying Disability is based on extensive interviews with the subjects and the people who know them. It marks their similarities and differences, the forces that drove them to achieve, the impact they have had on policies and practice, and how the modern history of disability in the UK has been played out in their lives. Defying Disability is not just a good read; it will inform professionals in the field, students in disability studies, disabled people, their families and carers, and everyone interested in disability politics and policies.
Mary Wilkinson was Editor of the campaigning newspaper, Disability Now, for over 20 years, until 2005.

Call for submissions for new anthology of microfiction/prose poetry
We are looking for pieces of microfiction, sometimes called short short fiction or flash fiction, and pieces of prose poetry that tell a story in under 600 words. There is no minimum word limit.
Microfiction and prose poetry are very short prose pieces that harness a poetic world but still contain a story with a beginning, middle and end, and imply a lot more than their small structure can contain. They are flashes of something - an epiphany, perhaps - that often subvert expectation and work in a minimal structure. Some argue that there is a definitive boundary between prose poetry and microfiction, but you may submit either for this publication.
You may submit as many pieces as you wish, and those chosen will appear in a new Cinnamon microfiction and prose anthology to be published in late 2010, co-edited by Holly Howitt and Jan Fortune-Wood.
Submission Guidelines
Please read these carefully. Due to the large volume of submissions expected we will only be able to process those submissions that conform to the guidelines.
The deadline for submissions is: 15th August 2009
Each piece must be no longer than 600 words. There is no minimum length.
Pieces can be on any subject and you may send several pieces, but please submit them as a single word attachment using a .doc or .rtf format
Submit pieces to both Holly Howitt - Holly Howitt - cinnamonanthology@googlemail.com and Jan Fortune-Wood - jan@cinnamonpress.com with ‘microfiction anthology' in the subject line.
In the body of the email please type your name and location.
Submissions without virus protection will not be opened and read so please ensure your virus protection is up to date.
We hope to inform everyone who has sent a submission of which pieces will be included by late November 2009. Please ensure that you inform us if your email address changes after sending the submission.
The decisions of the editors are final.
All those whose work is selected will receive a copy of the anthology.
