Dana's Note
Hi - thought I would hijack Dana this week and write up a little about DaDaFest 09. We have just completed our first week and the response has been amazing - we have had over 50 media opportunities - a mix of press articles, interviews, radio and even BBC and ITV coverage - so after nine long years our messages, our arts and our cultures are being acknowledged and celebrated. Needless we to say we are all exhausted, but delighted that our hard work is paying dividends. There are only 10 days left of events - so do come along - tell us what you think and help us get even bigger and better for next year.
Do remember to vote - send a post card vote into the address or go online at www.dadahello.com/dadafest/nominations. It is a fantastic shortlist full of worthy winners - so helps us decide who deserves the award in Writers [ Sponsored ITV Productions], Emerging Arts [ Sponsored Breakthrough UK], Community Arts /Events [ North West Regional Development Agency and the overall Arts Award [ Culture Liverpool]!
We are really pleased to announce that Nabil Shaban has accepted the lifetime achievement award [sponsored by National Museums Liverpool: a well deserved accolade for all his many years of hard work, creative endeavours and disability campaigning. Congratulations and thank you Nabil!

Best wishes

Training
Cultural Leadership Training for Disabled & Deaf Artists on Friday 4th December at 1pm ‘Leadership' is a complicated word. Is being a leader about your job title? Is it about behaving in a particular way? Can you be an artist and a leader? And if you are a disabled person, how does that change leading and leadership?
Interested in finding out more? Sync is a leadership development programme for disabled people in the arts and cultural sector, and part the Cultural Leadership Programme. With over 130 members nationally, Sync provides online and face to face opportunities for disabled people to think, learn, talk, write, reflect and find out more about leadership and leading. It's not about pushing a particular viewpoint; it is about encouraging people to think about their own perspective.
Sync and DaDa: Disability & Deaf Arts are holding an introduction to leadership session in Liverpool on 4th December as part of DaDaFest. It's a chance to find out more about leadership theories from a disability perspective. It's open to all disabled people working or wanting to work in the arts. Places are free, but limited to 15 disabled people only so please book asap by emailing joverrent@adainc.or events@dadahello.com.
To find out more about Sync, check out www.syncleadership.co.uk

Disability Arts News
Background noise on television
In the June/July we reported the results of our February online survey on TV access. More than half of you told us you switched off television programmes because of intrusive background noise. Last year's annual survey revealed that 83% of you felt that background noise/music affected your ability to hear speech on TV, so this is clearly an issue you feel strongly about. However, it's also a complex field - so we have contacted members in the Salford and Manchester areas about some new research that has potential to make a difference.
Ben Shirley and his team from the Acoustics Research Centre at The University of Salford have been funded by Dolby Laboratories, Inc. to study aspects of what is often called "clean audio". This refers to techniques and procedures that could be used to achieve clarity of speech for the maximum number of viewers - especially those with hearing loss. Ben and his team are studying means of separating sound effects from the speech and giving a degree of control to the viewer. Their findings could lead to a technological solution where viewers can turn down the background noise when they want to.
Our volunteers are being invited to take some initial audiometric tests before being assessed on how well they can discern "speech in noise". They will then be asked to rate some film clips for intelligibility and the effort needed to understand them. Thanks to everyone who has volunteered so far. If you are hard of hearing and would like to take part yourself, please contact Danny McCaul by telephone (0161 295 4615) or email d.j.mccaul@salford.ac.uk this is open to RNID members. You would need to travel to Salford two or three times during July, August or September but will be reimbursed your travel expenses (up to £15 per day.) In the mean time, if you are unhappy about background noise on any particular television programme, please do take the time to complain directly to the broadcaster concerned. Broadcasters often tell us they don't get many complaints, so it's important you do take action in this way. To find out how to complain, visit our website www.rnid.org.uk/tvaccess or call our Information Line on 0808 808 0123 (telephone) or 0808 808 9000 (textphone).

Your words immortalised!
The final winning design in the Liverpool Echo's Open Culture Benchmark competition is to stand outside the new Museum of Liverpool, due to open in spring 2011. Designer Ilsa Parry, who recently won the Philippe Starck-led BBC2 Design for Life competition, is now asking the people of Merseyside to help to complete her Storyteller bench. The bench, which uses elements of the 08 logo, so people will sit in the recesses created by the two numbers to effectively immerse them in culture, will also be covered in stories and words to make a lasting impression on those who see it. Now Ilsa's winning design, which she also used as part of her submission to enter the Design for Life competition, is set to be turned into reality. And she's asking Merseysiders to contribute their words, phrases, poems, song lyrics, stories, amusing anecdotes, and snippets of letters or other text. A selection will then be engraved on the finished bench.
How to submit: Write about what means something to you - it could be a short story, poem, experience, snippet of conversation, words to a song you have written or something you have overheard which makes you proud to be Liverpudlian. The closing date is Friday November 27. All entries will be read but only parts of submissions may be used. Send it along with your name and contact details by either:
Post - Storyteller, Open Culture, Liverpool Innovation Park, 360 Edge Lane, Liverpool L7 9NJ

Snog, Marry, Avoid?
We are casting for BBC Three's hugely popular television programme "Snog Marry Avoid?" which is returning for a third series. It's a fun and quirky programme with a cult following and is BBC Three's most popular Factual Entertainment programme. The programme involves people with an overly glamorous or outrageous look. This could be anything from fake tan, hair extensions etc to tattoos, piercings and outrageous clothes. A computer called P.O.D. (Personal Overhaul Device) who does not "compute" the changes they have made to their appearance, gives them a makeunder rather than a makeover, resulting in a more natural look. We are keen to involve the disabled community in our casting. Contact: Colette Callus T: 020 8222 4585 M: 07971 385 970 F: 020 8222 4088
