Disability Arts News
Public Art Commission
Artist Brief: Knowsley Arts & Heritage Service invite applications from public artists to create a high quality, permanent piece(s) of public art for the new Huyton Arts & Sports Centre For Learning, Knowsley. £150M has been invested into transforming Knowsley's 10 secondary schools into 7
exceptional new centres for learning. The first of the seven new centres is Christ the King, North Huyton opened in January 2009 and a public commission by glass artist Sarah Galloway is in place there.
We have recruited four artists Adrian Moakes, Faith Bebbington, Debbie Ryan and Dave Burns who are currently developing pieces with the five other centres. Knowsley Arts and Heritage Service are now looking to commission a public artist to create work for the remaining centre - Huyton Arts & Sports Centre for Learning. Central to the programme of works will be engaging and developing ideas with school pupils, community groups and other stake holders. Project outcomes:
To create a piece(s) of bespoke art to feature in the new Centre for Learning. To inspire and add value to GCSE and BTEC art students subject experience through involvement in a practical project. To engage students from other year groups particularly Year 7. To maximise the involvement of the students in the Centre for Learning in the design. To involve the wider community to contribute to positive attitudes toward the new centres. Commission Location & Themes: The final design will be established through consultation but the following loose guidelines have
been offered: The piece(s) needs to be sited in the centre's large atrium. The piece(s) is likely to be either wall mountable or suspended. The centre would like to reflect the ethos of their new school within the piece, the schools motto is ‘Learners Today, Leaders Tomorrow'.They have arts and sports status, and students are encouraged to be global citizens and
lifelong learners. The artwork could maximise the atriums light and introduce more colour. Potential to consider artwork screening or glass panels to ‘close off' some high open areas of corridors overlooking the atrium. Artist Specification: Artists applying can be from a wide range of different disciplines. We are open to suggestions and welcome new and inspiring ideas. We are looking to recruit an artist with the following qualities: A track record of producing high quality artwork & meeting deadlines, ability to inspire, as well as being able to take inspiration from others, experience of working with a wide range of audiences including schools, youth groups, community groups etc.Ability to deliver high quality and engaging workshops, a lateral thinker and problem solver. S/he will have demonstrable experience of: Successfully devising public artworks considered by clients as fit for purpose, cost effective and free of maintenance complications. Consultation with participants on the project as well as with the wider public / immediate community to ensure full ownership over work created. Liaising with other agents e.g. planning officers, environmental services to ensure the safe and successful installation of work. The budget for this commission is £11,000. This amount covers the workshop period, any inspirational visits, transport costs, materials and the design and creation of the final work. Installation will be the responsibility of KMBC, using funds from a separate budget. Transforming Schools Ltd (and their subcontractors Balfour Beatty) will install the works, guided by a method statement from the commissioned artist. In order for an application to be considered, the following information must be provided: Full details of the individual including address and contact details. Up to date CV linked to the artist specification above. Details and images of previous work. A written statement outlining your approach to the commission. Your availability for work from January 2009. Full daily rate. Evidence of CRB check within last 2 years and proof of public liability insurance. Contact details for two referees. The successful artist will be responsible to the Arts and Heritage Team Leader and will regularly liaise and report back to her. They will also have support from the Public Art Coordinator who is coordinating the programme. The artist will be provided with a contract for the commission. The application should be clearly marked ‘Public art commission for Huyton Centre for
Learning' and addressed to: Jo Dry, Arts and Heritage Team Leader, Knowsley Arts and Heritage Service, Prescot Museum, 34 Church Street,
Liverpool, L34 3LA. Alternatively email Jo.Dry@knowsley.gov.uk
(Warn us in advance should these images exceed 2MB) If you would like any of your images/documentation returned please include an appropriate SAE. The closing date for submission will be 5pm Monday 9th November 2009. Any application received after the deadline will not be considered.
Shortlisted candidates will be invited to a short interview at the centre in early December. We envisage the successful artist to begin work with the centre in January 2010. No specific deadline has been set for completion of the commissioned work yet. For further information please contact
