Make a date with the Secret Millionaire

A partnership between the Big Lottery and Channel 4's "The Secret Millionaire" programme has led to a new funding programme. Grants of between £300 and £10,000 are available until December - but no guarantee you'll be on TV. In case you haven't seen it, the reality TV show "The Secret Millionaire" features a millionaire who goes and lives incognito in a deprived area, meets local projects and then - at the end of the programme - reveals his true identity and gives a large donation to the projects he thinks are most deserving. The Big Lottery has set aside some funds this year in partnership with the programme. (It's not clear if any additional money has been allocated). They are looking for applications for funding from community groups (the conditions are very similar to the Awards for All funding programme), and they are also asking member of the public to nominate groups that they feel are deserving. All applications must be made before December 21st, 2009. The total budget is £1 million and grants of from £300 and £10,000 are available. They will be asking some of the applicant groups to agree to be filmed for inclusion in a future The Secret Millionaire series, but there's no commitment. http://secretmillionaire.channel4.com/funds_info/ http://www.biglotteryfund.org.uk/prog_secret_millionaire_fund.htm?region... Identity
From Colin Hambrook: ‘I felt very energised by a recent get together hosted by Shape giving a few of us an open opportunity to talk about identity. I feel passionate about the disability arts movement, but we have been in a place of stasis for a while now. Many of the organisations that sprang up in the heyday of disability arts are either going down the pan or changing brand; disassociating themselves from Disability Arts. Sometimes it seems that everything we fought for is slowly and silently disappearing. Is that a bad thing? The DDA has made a difference somehow, yet how exactly? We always talked about the legislation as having no teeth, yet where are the younger people coming to the movement with the same access barriers to overcome; the same fears of being locked away? Access barriers still exist and disabled people are still locked and drugged up for being disabled - yet more and more we hear of artists with a wide range of visible and invisible impairments who don't relate to being a 'disabled artist'. Can we just explain this refusal as internalised oppression? The debate gave me cause to reflect a little on the last 15 years I have been involved with the Disability Arts movement and I just wanted to share this and encourage you to add your comment to the dialogue. Please have a read at http://www.disabilityartsonline.org/Editors_blog and let me know what you think.'
