Dana's Note
Hello to you all,
I was horrified to discover on MSN this morning that advertisements for children's Christmas toys are already up and running. Is it a conspiracy of the toy makers to make the year move even faster than it is doing? If like me you need to get back to the fact that we're still living in our (somewhat) tropical summer, take time out now for some of the lovely chunks of coconut we have for you this week.
Yours, Dana.

'Unto the self' is an exhibition of large metal figures and accompanying drawings by the internationally recognised sculptor Robert Bryce Muir. The installation's fundamental criterion is that questions are asked about the human condition with regard to us all, whatever our age, race or belief. The exhibition includes a number of other drawings and sculptures by the artist that explore similar themes in relation to the human body. During the exhibition there will be various educational opportunities including talks and classes. A described tour for blind and visually-impaired visitors will be held on Thursday 23 July (time to be confirmed), led by Anne Hornsby and the artist. AND Festival
Abandon Normal Devices (AND) is a new festival, taking place across the Northwest until 2012 and beyond. A catalyst for production and experimentation at the intersection of Digital Culture and New Cinema, AND invites us to consider what are our normal devices? And why and how might we abandon them? AND will spill from screens and galleries into the streets across the region. With screenings, installations, online projects, public realm interventions, debates, workshops and live events, AND has a distinctive emphasis on critique and ideas. At the heart of this festival lies a fascination with ideas about social, physical and technological norms with artistic approaches from the playful to the downright provocative. Launching in Liverpool 23-27 September 2009, AND is presented by FACT (Foundation for Art and Creative Technology) (Liverpool), Cornerhouse (Manchester) and folly (Lancaster), with future editions planned in Manchester, Lancashire and Cumbria. The debut festival offers an energetic programme across Liverpool's cultural spaces, providing a legacy in the region after the success of Liverpool's year as European Capital of Culture. The festival forms part of WE PLAY, the Northwest cultural legacy programme for the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. 2009 AND highlights:
* Apichatpong Weerasethakul - PrimitiveThe Godfather of independent Thai cinema returns to FACT for his first solo UK exhibition, a multi-platform work, Primitive, a multi-screen video installation that harmonises Weerasethakul's talent as a filmmaker and video artist. * Keep It Slick - Infiltrating Capitalism with The Yes Men In a European exclusive, AND will present the very first UK solo exhibition of one of the most important political artists of the last decade. The show will also involve opportunities for interaction with the Yes Men themselves. * Dark Fibre Directed by Jamie King with Co-Director, Peter Mann, Dark Fibre is a gripping, provocative feature film mixing scripted fiction and documentary and featuring a performance by Peter Wintonick (Manufacturing Consent) and a cameo by Noam Chomsky. * Krzysztof Wodiczko - War Veteran Vehicle A new large-scale video projection by Krzysztof Wodiczko for a public space in Liverpool. Representing Poland at this year's Venice Biennale, Wodiczko is renowned internationally for his socially engaged, politically charged work. Previous work in the UK has included the 1985 projections of a swastika on the South African Embassy and a scud missile on Trafalgar Square. Wodiczko is interested in the situation of soldiers who fought during recent armed conflicts and are returning to civilian life, and for the this project which forms part of AND, the artist will work with men and women from the Northwest who have experienced active duty in the armed forces.* KMA - Strange Attractors - The Anatomy of Dr Tulp a study of embodied discourse; how we use our bodies to move and to communicate in a material world, and how our bodies mediate between the internal and external worlds, at a microscopic and global level. Using light projected onto the ground, it examines the relationship between the motion of real, inanimate, and virtual bodies. * On the Waterfront - DJ Spooky presents Rebirth of a Nation AND joins forces with Culture Liverpool and Walk the Plank to present the finale of a season of summer events located at Liverpool's Pier Head and Albert Docks. Transforming the new Liverpool Museum into a gigantic cinema screen AND will present a night of remixed and remastered moving image, featuring DJ Spooky, who will create a unique version of Rebirth of a Nation.* Carolee Schneemann AND is proud to present an exhibition and personal appearance by the renowned American artist Carolee Schneemann, who will take over Tate Liverpool's Wolfson Gallery for the duration of the festival. Revered for her pioneering and provocative work in performance and film, Schneemann deploys her own body as both subject matter and a source of knowledge. * M.A.R.I.N. Media Art Research Interdisciplinary Network Founded by artists Tapio Mäkelä and Marko Peljhan, M.A.R.I.N. is a mobile residency programme set on board a catamaran sailboat, redesigned and equipped to be a sustainable environment for transdisciplinary research in arts, sciences and technology.* Action Diana by The Centre of Attention a cover version of a classic feature film shot for shot using the people of Liverpool as the stars. Experimenting with the notion of re-appropriation and re-mix, The Centre of Attention absurdly push participation into uncomfortable realms, questioning both the gallery as an exhibition space, and the poverty of video art in relation to cinema. * One Night Grandstand by The People Speak Starting in August 2009, working with the young people in Merseyside to adopt the roles of commentator, filmmaker, broadcaster and sound pundit, transforming a regular sporting event into a full-scale production. The young people will take on specified roles for the production of the grandstand style spectacle - and a film documenting the process will be screened at AND festival in September.

Arts Jobs
Performer Wanted
Quarantine are seeking one more performer with strong dance skills for our new theatre piece, Make-believe. Make-believe will interrogate ideas about belief - starting with what it is, what it means to believe in something, how belief develops in the individual, what's going on in the brain when we believe, how difficult it is to 'suspend disbelief' in a theatre... We have 4 performers already. We're looking for 1 more performer to devise the performance with and -perhaps- to problematise the whole idea of belief, pretending and acting. Quarantine's approach rests on developing material from the personal history and experiences of its performers. For Make-believe, we're particularly interested in meeting performers who have strong dance skills. We're particularly interested in dancers with mixed backgrounds of experience and who might be interested in working choreographically with other performers (non-dancers) - although this is not essential. We're most interested in movement that is individual and idiosyncratic. This is a full-time commitment, paid at ITC/Equity rates. Rehearsal and development takes place at Contact in Manchester from 1st September to 27th October 2009. Performances in Manchester then UK touring from 28th October to around 5th December 2009. Performance dates will be confirmed in July. The successful applicants will be subject to a CRB check. To apply to be considered for Make-believe, please : Tell us 10 things that you believe , send a short CV/description of previous performance work (dvd's of performance also welcome) Please e-mail your response to Richard Gregory: richard@qtine.com by 5pm on Friday 24 July. For more about Quarantine and our previous work check our website at www.qtine.com
