Sensational Seminars
25 June and 1 July 2009 We all use our senses to interpret and experience the arts. Have you thought how this impacts people with sensory impairments? There can often be fear, misunderstanding and lack of knowledge around working within these issues. We are delighted to invite you to explore these issues by attending one of the Sensational Seminars that are being run by DaDa Disability and Deaf Arts and Arts Council England North West. These are two exciting and inspiring seminars for Visual and Performing arts organisations in the region to explore and discuss creativity and sensory access drawing on artists' and organisations' experience. These two seminars will provide a positive, safe environment for colleagues to discuss some of the issues around sensory accessibility. The events are aimed at staff working in programming, marketing and audience development plus any relevant board or staff members. The day will be made up by presentations and performances from international and award-winning artists and companies sharing their experiences and successes plus opportunities for discussion to identify some solutions and ways forward. "Arts Council England, North West is pleased to be working in collaboration with DaDa Disability and Deaf arts to bring you Sensational. The seminars offer a real opportunity for us to share and learn from the good practice happening in our region and to work together to continue to develop a vibrant, diverse and inclusive arts sector for artists and audiences". Oska Bright
This year's festival takes place on the 17th, 18th and 19th November 2009; if you want to book a ticket they will go on sale from August. Our Big Olympic Project: We have launched a campaign to raise money for a mobile cinema bus. When we toured Oska Bright films all over the United Kingdom last year, lots of people told us it was difficult for them to get transport and support to come to the cinemas we were at. So we had the great idea of turning a double-decker bus into a cinema and taking the cinema to people! Our mobile cinema will tour around the country taking films to people who can't get out easily. Please support our campaign by looking on our website and going to this page:
http://www.oskabright.co.uk/Bus.htm Ask as many people as you can to help us to buy the bus and get it running! Making your own films: We have now finished our online guide on how to make films. The ‘How to Make a Film' pages on our website www.oskabright.co.uk are easy to use and understand, lots of people have told us they now use the website to help them make their films.

Collaborative installation work at Liverpool Cathedral. ‘A New Start' is a stunning new installation piece that will be shown in Liverpool Cathedral this June to coincide with Refugee Week (15th-21st June 2009). The piece brings together pieces of pottery, sculpture, textile art and poetry that have been created by the group to reflect on the theme of endings and new beginnings, and is a poignant reminder of what we carry forward with us as we move into the future. The piece is a truly international response to the theme, and has been created predominantly by artists from Kurdistan and Afghanistan. SOLA ARTS is hosting a preview event on Wednesday 15th June from 4-5.30pm, at the Lady Chapel balcony in Liverpool Cathedral (entrance off Canning Street), and we would be delighted if you could come along. There will also be an opportunity to meet the artists. Contact us on 0151 726 8440 or at sola_arts@yahoo.co.uk for more information.

Workshop Director Wanted
We are a community circus group based in Belfast which is a co-operative of circus performers (mainly street entertainers) and tutors. We were formed in 1995 and in 2000 formed a team to run programs working with groups living with disabilities throughout Northern Ireland. Initially the main aim was to make circus skill accessible to people who would not otherwise get the opportunity. Most of our recent programs have all culminated in a public showcase in the form a show, led by a professional double act, who then introduces participants into the show to perform their own skills. Our main funding body for this work has been the Arts Council Lottery. The Arts Council have been very interested in our work but are interested in how we can develop the artistic side. Therefore we applied to the small grants scheme for the costs to run a summer school and bring in an experienced outside director to lead the project ending in a showcase show which will be performed in the summer school venue, which is a 200 seat theatre. The show would be open to the public but will mainly be made up of family, friends, funding bodies and invites etc. We are planning on have 20 participants all of whom will come from groups we have worked with in the past. There could be a wide range of skill levels but we will know in advance once applications to participate have been received. We will have 4 of our tutors working with the director, they will be selected from our current tutor team. We can also add expertise when it comes to devising the show, we have props, illusions etc which could be incorporated if required. Once we make a short list of potential candidates we would be looking for someone who could program the day to day running of the school, devise and deliver the showcase. The project is from 17th Aug to 28th August the showcase being on the final day. We aim to operate with the participants 11-1.00pm and 2.- 4.00pm Mon to Fri. Financially the budget is tight. The grant allocated us £1,250 to cover the costs of a director. However, we will have to pay a fee, travel and accommodation. I am assuming that we will have to find funds from another source to top this up. Therefore we are interested in finding the best person for the job and then negotiate a fee. Affordability will then be the final criteria in deciding who we can get. If you are interested would you send us your CV and two references, we will then make a short list and then interview by phone. Please contact: streetwise@nireland.com for more information.

Feedback on Audio described Films at Liverpool One
John Heldt recently attended an audio described screening at Odeon Liverpool One and had this to say: "I've just been to see Terminator and the audio description was spot on, of good quality and very clear. It's produced through digital cordless head sets that are adjustable for comfort. A volume dial allows sound to be increased or decreased depending upon your tastes or how you can cope with different scales of sounds. That's when the action is totally enhanced or the background music's highlighted." Please feel free to try it out!
