Knowsley Arts Service Consultation Project with disabled children and young people in Knowsley

We aim to offer a range of creative taster workshops as a catalyst for consultation with children and young people to find out their needs, ideas, aspirations and wishes about what they would like to do in their free time.
Their responses will be recorded and put forward in a report which will shape creative projects for children and young people with disabilities in the future. Potentially, this will result in: The signposting of children and young people to universal mainstream activities in which they may participate. The taster workshops will be delivered in five of the special schools in Knowsley throughout the week commencing Monday 13th July and each school will receive a whole day of creative workshops which will include: Street dance, Drama, Visual art, Drumming and DJ / Rapping. Professional, experienced, high quality practitioners will be used and throughout the course of a week, all the schools will receive taster workshops in all the above art forms. Arts Service sessional staff will work together with school staff who know and are familiar with the young people to engage them in the consultation after they have participated in the workshops and record their views. The information will then be collated into a report and used to shape further programmes. Each practitioner will deliver up to 5 short workshops in each school, each day £200 per practitioner, per day. Total: £1,000 per week. This includes all travel, planning and any other expenses The aim is to work with every young person in each of the identified schools and that they all have the chance to engage in each art form. The school staff are best placed to identify venues for these, each one being up to an hour long and we can work with school staff to address this issue. All Practitioners must have: Current Enhanced CRB, Public Liability Insurance, experience of working with children and young people who have disabilities, experience in one of the identified art forms above. It is desirable that practitioners: Have their own transport, are positive and enthusiastic, reliable. For further information and to express an interest to work on this project, please contact Lucy Knight or Leanne Jones at Knowsley Arts Service on 0151 443 5619 or email lucy.knight@knowsley.gov.uk / leanne.jones@knowsley.gov.uk

Outside In
Pallant House Gallery in Chichester, West Sussex, requests urgent submissions from artists for OUTSIDE IN, a unique open-entry arts prize for marginalised artists across the South of England (submission deadline12th June, 2009). OUTSIDE IN is a groundbreaking project which was set up by Pallant House Gallery to invite debate on the often overlooked subject of outsider art by providing a platform for artists who are marginalised due to health, disability or because their work does not fit a prescribed norm. The main vehicle for the venture is a biennial open art competition, which this year will be held across the whole of the South of England. Culminating in a three month exhibition at Pallant House Gallery (4 August to 8 November 2009), the competition also offers a series of awards and an opportunity to have a residency or solo exhibition at Pallant House Gallery. A programme of events will accompany the exhibition including talks, tours and screenings of key outsider films such as a rare showing of the first two episodes of ‘Journeys into the Outside' with Jarvis Cocker. Please find attached a press release for Outside In a biennial competition for Outsider and marginalised artists including details about our film festival at the New Park Cinema Chichester. The closing date for entering work for Outside In is June 12th. Visit www.outsidein.org.uk to find out more or to enter work.

BBC Radio Documentary
Request deadline: 17 June 2009. Contact by e-mail at mailto:vivienne.perry@unique.com. I am currently producing a documentary to transmit in August this year on BBC 1Xtra - a digital radio station aimed at fans of black music aged between 15-24. The programme is looking at the experiences and obstacles that young disabled people face when entering into relationships. The programme will cover the practicalities of going out and meeting people, look head on at some of the misconceptions that exist about young disabled people and their attitudes to sex and relationships, and really give an insight into this rite of passage. I'd really like the programme to be a frank and honest look at dating: asking about having sex for the first time, about embarrassing and humourous dating disasters, as well as finding out how hard it can be facing prejudice and stigma just for wanting a relationship. I am very keen to find young disabled people who would be willing to be interviewed about their experiences, good and bad, and potentially might be interested in going out and doing some recording too.
