NOISE Youth Symposium
5th October 2009 - Funded by British Council. The NOISE arts charity offers passionate young people creative opportunities to further their career and successfully equip them with the knowledge and contacts to advance their future employability. NOISE is hosting a national symposium to enhance cross-sector dialogue and cooperation between formal and non-formal education models to inspire innovation, creativity and entrepreneurship. The project discusses ‘Formal Education vs. Non-Formal Education' to assist young people's entry into the Creative Industries. The conference project acts as a learning process for those young people involved in producing the event; to help them to develop skills and employability. The objectives for the event are to enhance the quality of youth development support systems in Europe, and to influence policy makers on the impact and necessity of the often overlooked non-formal education sector on the Creative economy. Fifteen NOISE participants from across the UK have researched examples of non-formal education. The team will communicate this research to a wider audience via the ‘Guerrilla Reportage' section on www.noisefestival.com prior to the event. The event takes place over one day during on the 5th October 2009. The one day symposium establishes a dialogue between young people, the non-formal education sector and policymakers. It will host up to 5 sessions with direct interaction between young participants and senior policy makers responsible for employment, further education and Government policies that influence a young person's entry into the Creative Industries. The debates, presentations and meetings are based around the ideas and research that the 15 young participants have prepared. During the event, held at The Chinese Arts Centre in Manchester, a range of invited representatives from the creative and education sectors will discuss innovative models of non-formal education, current policies on non-formal education and its importance for the Creative Industries. These include Shadow Minister for Universities & Skills David Evennett, Singapore government representatives, MEP Arlene McCarthy, the Founder of The School of Everything, as well as Universities, Skills Councils, Community Arts initiatives that engage disadvantaged young people, educationalists and journalists. The young participants will generate an event magazine, following the main event, by collating research, debates and recorded interviews - creating an attractive and insightful document to be published as an insert in a national broadsheet. The participating young people will be able to gain the non-formal Arts Awards accreditation as part of the project. For further information contact Project Coordinator Rachel Southern on 0161 - 237 9009 or office@noisefestival.com

ILAE Award to Gus Cummins
This summer Gus Cummins was flown to Budapest to collect the International League Against Epilepsy Centenary Award for Film for his submission ‘Ictal' - extracted from his video installation at DaDaFest 2008.
‘Ictal' shows Gus having a temporal lobe seizure in public. The judges felt the piece avoided stereotypical representation of epilepsy. Its soundtrack was created from an EEG recording of his brain signal during a seizure.
Gus also submitted his digital audiovisual work ‘Invaders', consisting almost entirely of EEG brainwaves converted to sound and vision in a ‘Space Invaders' video game style. This won a highly commended award.
The artist is very grateful to Arts Council England SW, DaDa and PVA MediaLab for their funding and support. Gus is exhibiting new work at Holton Lee, Dorset, September 19th - October 31st.
