Disability Arts News
Disabled Voices
My name is Genevieve Barr, I am a deaf actress who played the lead role in the BBC drama series ‘The Silence' alongside a stellar cast of Hugh Bonneville, Gina McKee, Douglas Henshall and Dervla Kirwan, directed by Bafta winning award director, Dearbhla Walsh. It is due to be aired the week of 12th July, primetime at 9pm on BBC1. It is my inspiration to get more disabled people into acting and put together a production that showcases disabled talent and celebrates difference. So what do I want from you? Five weeks of your time - four days a week from 19th of July to the 20th of August. North London based, near Old Street tube - the Rosebury Branch theatre welcomes you to it's theatre space to rehearse and collaborate a production centred on the theme of inequality and exploring social issues. We have a fantastic collection of industry experts from circus performers, dance teachers, directors specialising in physical theatre, voice coaches, and other practitioners who are prepared to come in and offer their time to help develop you into being a better actor and more rounded individual. Best of all, it's free. I will provide communication support, for those who need it. I will also do my best to reimburse you for access requirements - but that is dependent on the size of the budget. What I can offer is a fantastic experience with a great bunch of people and the opportunity for you to show the public what you have to offer. Please contact me at cheekygen@hotmail.com if you are interested. This is targeted at 15-25 year olds, but if you are outside of that age category or are interested in volunteering your time, expertise or have any queries, I'm all ears!

Acting Opportunity with ITV
The Oaks are currently casting for an ITV Drama and are desperately
seeking a deaf actress for one of the leading roles. The character 'Olive' is seen at two ages - around 28 and then at around 50. We are looking for an actress to play the role of Olive at 50. We need to ensure that at both ages Olive looks like the same person - therefore we have someone specific in mind - we are looking for someone who is slender and about 5'5'' who is attractive, with light blue eyes. The character uses BSL, but when she's with hearing people she feels comfortable around she uses English and has quite a lot of dialogue. We are all working to ensure authentic portrayal onscreen - we really want this character to be cast by a deaf actress so get in touch with me, or Andy from The Oaks directly on

12-16? Get ready to audition!
The Dominion Theatre, home to smash hit musical We Will Rock You is holding auditions for free places on their hugely successful ‘Workshop Week'- a week of fun theatre workshops for 12-16 year olds running from Monday 26th - Saturday 31st July 2010. The Workshops will be led by professional performers who have appeared in many of the shows themselves, and students will get the chance to quiz them on what life is really like as a West End performer. The students will also be treated to a mind blowing backstage tour, tickets to see "We Will Rock You", the chance to meet cast members and have their programmes signed before heading into the Studio for a special farewell party.
Dominion Theatre Workshop Week 2010 is giving away 2 free places and several heavily discounted places for those who show keenness, enthusiasm and promise at the auditions.
