DaDaFest International 10 presents ‘Disabled Women in India: Relationships and Sexuality through the Bollywood Lens' with Dr Anita Ghai Sunday 11th July 2010: 1pm to 4pm, Sandon Room, The Bluecoat, School Lane, Liverpool L1 3BX
Dr Anita Ghai is an internationally renowned scholar and disability rights activist from New Delhi, India. She has written extensively around issues of disability, gender and sexuality from a post-colonial perspective.
Within the context of India where many female foetuses are aborted not for disability but rather due to their female gender, foetal ultrasound serves as an ambiguous tool producing new forms of representation.
Drawing on her conversations with other disabled women around India, Anita will address how sexuality and reproduction are weaved with disability using examples from Bollywood films, such as Sparsh, Guru, Pa, Dosti, Black, Sixth Happiness and Iqbal.
This is a DaDaFest International 10 Trailblazer event
A Free event but a ticket is required. For booking please contact tickets and information at the Bluecoat on 0151 702 5324

RADAR LEADERSHIP PROGRAMME
Are you someone who likes taking initiative and longs to change the world around you? Do you want to influence public life in the UK? Would you like to be a school Governor, part of a community forum, a tenants association, a Non-Departmental Public Body?, a disability organisation? RADAR is interested in equipping people living with Ill health, Injury or Disability (IID) to be leaders and influencers in public life, and to take up leadership positions in the public, private and third (voluntary) sectors. RADAR won funding in 2009 to deliver a series of leadership events for disabled people, following on from our work with Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) and the Disability Rights Commission (DRC). A series of four Leadership Development Days are scheduled to run between September and December 2010, offering a blend of skills training and personal development work. In total there will be 100 places available, with 40 of these made up from the cited underrepresented groups. Successful applicants will attend all four events and it is an excellent opportunity to develop your full leadership potential and realise your dreams.
The Leadership Development Days will equip you with many of the key skills that are crucial to being a leader and influencer. We are currently developing the programme, which is likely to include sessions on: Understanding your strengths and personality and making them work for you, identifying leadership opportunities, maximising your leadership experience, case studies, what makes a successful leader, successful networking, personal presentation, interview techniques, CV writing and job application, making the most of mentoring, one-to-one coaching on your personal priorities. There will be inspirational speakers, professional coaches, diversity employment consultants and plenty of tips and advice from other disabled people who have experience in leadership and influential positions. The aim is to help you create your own self-sustaining networks and plans, so that you can start to achieve your leadership aspirations. We also work closely with diversity recruitment agencies, enabling delegates to have early access to leadership opportunities as they emerge. All four events will take place at: BVSC - The Centre for Voluntary Action, 138 Digbeth, Birmingham, B5 6DR. The events will take place on: Tuesday 14th September 2010, Monday 18th October 2010, Wednesday 24th November 2010, Monday 13th December 2010. Participation in the leadership events is free for delegates. However, you will need to meet your own travel costs. If you are offered a place and then do not attend at short notice, without advising us why, we reserve the right to charge you a cancellation fee of £25, as the place could have been used for someone else. A small bursary will be available for those who experience genuine hardship and for whom the costs would otherwise be prohibitive. If this applies to you, please send in your application for the programme in the normal way, and if you are accepted onto the programme, we will then talk to you about the travel costs. Arts Jobs
Artist Wanted
FACT (Foundation for Art & Creative Technology) ARTIST CALL OUT.
Freehand (FACT's young peoples programme) is working with the support of The British Computing Society to deliver a weekend of workshops for young people in August. The aim is to work with a group of young people (aged 13-19) and the themes of our current exhibition ‘Persistence of Vision' (see below.) We are looking for an innovative and exciting artist to offer a 2 day workshop in computer and/or screen interaction but we are open to variations of this. We expect the artist we work with to have experience of working with children/young people and to have a current CRB. We are looking for something original that will be stimulating for young people and delve into new technology and the ideas behind our exhibition. We would like detailed ideas/proposals to be submitted to Louise Latter; Young People's Coordinator louise.latter@fact.co.uk 88 Wood Street, Liverpool, L1 4DQ by 2nd July. ARTIST FEE: £540 (2 DAYS DELIVERY, 1 DAY PLANNING).
The current exhibition at FACT is ‘Persistence of Vision': Visual media is radically changing the way we think and remember. Today, visual memories are captured, shared and revived on an unprecedented scale through the proliferation of digital cameras, camera phones and the immense popularity of social media websites like Flickr and YouTube.
Current research shows that repeated exposure to digital media (such as the Internet and computer games) is leading to physiological changes in the human brain. The new breed of ‘digital natives' are becoming more sophisticated at reading images as three-dimensional spaces, developing visual-spatial skills and creating mental maps. We are also becoming more adept at sourcing and responding to information quicker than previous generations. While these individual cognitive skills may not be new, the particular combination and intensity of them is.
