DaDa Disability and Deaf Arts Latest
A message from Alison Jones
Dear Friends and Colleagues,
Due to an organisational staffing re-structure at DaDa, (Disability and Deaf arts), my post as Arts Manager has now come to an end, and after twelve years service with DaDa my last day will be 20th May 2010.
I would, therefore, like to take this opportunity to thank all of DaDa's partners and stakeholders for their generosity, friendship and valued support during the numerous artistic collaborations that I have undertaken in my capacity as DaDa's Arts Manager.
The arts and creative industries have been an integral part of my life both within and outside of DaDa. Over the past twelve years, I have worked in a variety of settings with a diverse range of extremely talented artists, stakeholders and young people in both the Disability Arts and mainstream Visual Arts sectors. In my continued roles as practising artist, freelance consultant and educator, through a multi-sensory approach to arts and learning, I will endeavour to continue to influence change by promoting access and participation to all aspects of the arts for Disabled/Deaf people.
In the short term, I will be working for DaDa over the next few months as a freelance consultant, (from 7th June), to project manage the Young People's Volunteering Programme, as part of DaDaFest International 2010.
With warmest regards,
Ally

Disability Arts News
SOLA ARTS want your art work
For exhibition for the month of June 2010. Are you interest in art? Do you live in exile in Liverpool or Merseyside? Refugee or asylum seeker? Professional artist or simply like being creative? Annual Refugee Week (June) is coming up, and this year SOLA will be holding exhibitions in the city centre. For one of these exhibitions we are working with 'Home is Where the Heart Is' Exhibition Curators, supported by Liverpool City Council & PCT Grass Roots Innovators Fund. Although we are working with several groups for this opportunity there are still spaces for more people to showcase their creative talents. Artists and people interested in being creative from refugee, asylum seeker and the wider communities are invited to show work based on the theme of 'Home'. We are inviting refugee and asylum seeker artists or creative people in Merseyside to contribute artwork (2D please) for show in this great exhibition opportunity. This could be drawing, painting, textiles, poetry, photography or any other medium so long as it is 2D. The exhibition will be in shop windows in the city centre, so there will be good exposure to the public.
SOLA ARTS and Home is Where the Heart is, are offering free canvases (a range of sizes available) for use by artists in exile and we have some paints, pencils and other materials here at SOLA to use if anyone is interest but do not have materials. There will be a 'Private View' open evening for the exhibition in the beginning of June, and an Auction where artists can submit work for raising funds for Amnesty International (also involved in supporting this exhibition). Although work cannot be sold during the exhibition, artists will have their name and if they chose contact details put next to their artwork for anyone interested in making contact to commission future pieces. If you are interest contact Adele at SOLA ARTS on this email or call 0151 726 8440 / 07832232849. Deadline for submitting artwork is Monday May 31st 5pm at SOLA ARTS.

INSPIRED BY BANKSY?
Mencap wants organisations to make arts activities more accessible to young people with a learning disability. Every young person should have the chance to pursue a career, or even a hobby, without restrictions.
The 2010 Youth Arts Consultation, a research report produced in partnership with the Mencap arts team and the Arts Council England, found that it is much harder for young people with a learning disability to access the arts than their peers. The report makes a number of recommendations for improvements including: a ‘carers-go-free' scheme to be introduced by more organisations and venues. Currently nearly 2 in 3 young people polled rely on carers, parents, taxis, or specialist transport to attend arts activities. Consult with people with a learning disability and their supporters about suitability for scheduled times for activities.Venues should consider event timings to better dovetail with local public transport timetables. One young person said: "I'd like to do more film making. I'd like to show my films to other people". If organisations make arts activities more accessible, this could be a real possibility for thousands of young people with a learning disability. As well as making key recommendations for improvements, the 2010 Youth Arts Consultation contains detailed information of current arts activities available to young people with a learning disability. For further information and full detail of the report, please log onto www.artspider.org.uk/resources/other_info
