Dude - Where's My Culture?
Have YOUR say about Arts, Culture and Young People 18th June 2010, Zion Arts Centre, Manchester, 10am to 4pm. Millions of pounds each year are spent on arts and cultural facilities for young people, but is it being spent on the right things? How relevant are museums, libraries and cultural services to young people today, and more importantly how could they be improved? Dude - Where's My Culture? is an event which gives young people from across the North West the chance to talk about their culture, what it means to them and let people in charge know about the sorts of arts and cultural facilities they would like to see in their area. Young people who attend will have the opportunity to take part in a workshop to explore what arts and culture means to young people today during the morning session and will have the chance to put their point of view across to senior decision makers such as Art Gallery and Museum Directors, people from the media and from Government during the afternoon.
The event is planned and designed by young people from Bolton, and Blackburn and Darwin. During the morning young people will be expected to take part in a facilitated, discussion based workshop alongside other groups of young people from across the north west. During the afternoon young people will take part in "Circles" Debates containing around 15 young people, 2-3 "decision makers" and a young person to chair the debate. Young people in the debate have the chance to discuss statements with decision makers and raise issues that affect culture and how it impacts on their lives. The aim of this is to give the young people an opportunity to be listened to and influence cultural policy for young people within the region. The morning workshops will help prepare for these debates.
Dude Where's My Culture? is open to young people 13-19 (exception to 25 years) from the North West. We are committed to ensuring a wide range of young people from across the region attend and it is free to attend. Due to the limited number of spaces groups of no more than 5 young people and 1 worker should apply. If you organisation/group has a requirement for a second worker this can be accommodated, but only if this is a necessary requirement. The closing date for applications will be Tuesday 1st June 2010 and you will be informed by Monday 7th June 2010 if your group has a place (via email). We will be unable to consider applications received after the closing date. Please return your completed forms to: Tracy Bailey North West Regional Youth Work Unit, Unit 40, Bold Business Centre, Bold Lane, Sutton, St Helens WA9 4TX, Email to info@nwrywu.org.uk Tel 01925 295 837 Fax 01925 299388
