Dana's Note
Hello to you all,
Just when you thought you may need to start building an igloo, it looks like a break in the weather, but I've heard we're due more of the same, so rather than shaking a stick at the window to ward off the polar bear munching at the bins, get stuck into a bit of what we have for you this week- there's loads going on!

Create a new York
The aim of this free project is to engage you in the appreciation of York's history, heritage and buildings via the unique approach of ekphrasis. Offering a mix of classroom-based activities and visits to local cultural sites, you will have the opportunity to produce stories, poetry, drama or linked photo studies inspired by your encounters with historical artefacts. We'll visit York Art Gallery, the York Castle Museum and the Yorkshire Film Archive as we get ‘hands-on' with living history materials. No previous experience is required - just the desire
to help us re-imagine the city and create a ‘new' York. Workshops will be guided by an experienced tutor, with all taught sessions taking place on the University campus based at Heslington. Childcare provision and assistance with travel may be available - call for more information. The course lasts eight weeks and will start on four separate occasions: Monday 26 October, 9.15-11.15am, Wednesday 28 October 1.15-3.15pm, Monday 18 January, 9.15-11.15am, Wednesday 20 January, 1.15-3.15pm. Priority may be given to those with limited educational experience, so book early to avoid disappointment.

Young Brits at Art 2010: Turning young people's vision into art
The Equality and Human Rights Commission is re-launching its Young Brits at Art awards, inviting 11-19 year olds to express their vision of this year's theme: 'What would the world look like if we lived without prejudice?' National curriculum teaching packs are available to guide schools, pupil referral units, religious groups and other organisations that wish to explore the meaning of equality and human rights through art. Young people can also develop their own artwork and enter independently. Find out more about the resources on our website.
One of last year's winners, Stephanie Winn, said: 'When I won, I felt I managed to send out a positive message about the negative effects of discrimination. This year's theme provides the perfect opportunity for us to express our thoughts and voice our opinions through the medium of art. I hope we will see a change of attitude.' All the winners and shortlisted entries will be exhibited in London in the Summer. To view more information about Young Brits at Art please visit: www.equalityhumanrights.com/art.
