ROUTES TO REVOLUTION
Craftspace and The Community Integration Partnership (CIP) are seeking a contemporary craft maker to facilitate workshops for refugee and newly arrived women. Throughout October - November 2009 taster sessions were held with the view to establishing a core group of women to develop a craft social enterprise. A social enterprise is a business with social objectives, profits are not paid to shareholders but are reinvested back into the community. A social enterprise complements CIP's ethos of innovative ways in which to assist refugee women to develop their skills and confidence, to enhance integration and add value to local communities. We are seeking a contemporary craft practitioner for the next phase of the project to explore the potential products/artefacts and creative activities that might sustain a social enterprise through a series of innovative collaborations with the women. Participants will be led through a series of experiences working with the selected maker to explore materials, create a context and give a strong foundation for initial creative expression. The artist and participants will work together towards a public sharing of their pieces through exhibition and documentation. Throughout the project, documentation will play an important role as a vehicle for reflection, analysis and evaluation. The final work will be exhibited in the Community Gallery at Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery in October 2010. There will also be opportunities to involve other members of CIP and the local community, either through activities or through sharing events. The overarching theme of the first residency will be "Routes to Revolution". Birmingham has always been a place of revolution; of enlightened thinking, engineering genius, commercial prowess, cultural tolerance and creative diversity. It is a city that is always looking forward. The women are also looking forward and experiencing their own personal revolution of change and new experiences. It is envisaged that we will be asking for a commitment of 12 days between May - July @ £200 per day (including VAT) plus materials. 9 days of workshops, the remaining days for planning, constructing work and evaluation. Deadline for application: Thursday 22nd April Interviews will be held: Thursday 6th May
Planning meeting will be held: Tuesday 11th May 9.00 - 11.00am Sessions will start Thursday 20th May. For a brief (available from 14.4.10) please contact: Emma Daker, Exhibitions and Project Development Manager: e.daker@craftspace.co.uk or info@craftspace.co.uk

A Rebel Rant with Darcus Howe
Black Foot on the Backfoot? Race is back on the agenda with a vengeance. Darcus Howe, appearing as part of Writing on the Wall's 'Rebel Rants', will argue that despite gains made following the inner city uprisings of the 1980's and the publication of the Macpherson Report, in many ways Britain has changed for the worse for black communities. To support his position Darcus charts the return of police stop and search tactics, the drift of young black men into violence, increasing hostility towards immigrants and Muslims, and the establishment's accommodation of the fascist BNP party.
